Over the last twenty seven years, in all major disasters in Bangladesh, Suman Ahsanul Islam has been involved in strategic leadership, design and implementation, monitoring and coordination of emergency response programmes. In this context, he worked with disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation programmes at different humanitarian organisations include Oxfam, DFID (UKAids), Save the Children and CARE; played managerial roles in developing a community- focused humanitarian response and human resources for right based humanitarian actions, monitoring and coordinating in various development organisations. His experience also includes leading the Gender Justice & Diversity Division of BRAC and Terre des Hommes on child labour and sexual & reproductive health rights of adolescents. He is a Member of the Governing Board of Disaster Forum and Advisery Board Member of NIRAPAD; represented CARE Bangladesh in the National Disaster Management Advisery Committee. As a member of the drafting working group, he had contributed to the Bangladesh Disaster Management Act. 2012. Along with his disaster management & humanitarian experience, Mr Islam is a passionate video documentary maker. His documentary সাহস – “The Face” based on alleviating poverty through disaster risk reduction in northwest Bangladesh have won the 5th DEVCO Communication Awards - 2013 of European Commission; competing with development feature films from sixty-nine DEVCO (European Commission’s Directorate-General for Development and Cooperation) funded projects worldwide.
